ABOUT ME

I began my formal counselling training in 2002 at the Barnabus Training Consortium, with an advanced course in pastoral care and counselling.  I then continued my training with a Post Graduate Diploma, and then an MA, in Contemporary Therapeutic Counselling at the University of Hertfordshire.

My theoretical background is primarily in psychodynamic counselling.  Briefly, this means that I believe that many of our beliefs and behaviour patterns have roots in the past, so it is often helpful to explore a client's past to make sense of the present.  However, I also have training in person centred counselling, integrative counselling and CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy), and adopt a flexible approach, tailoring sessions to the needs of individual clients.

As part of my continuing professional development, I regularly attend courses and workshops.  Recent courses have included topics such as addictions, anger management, trauma and dissociative disorder and working with couples.

I am an accredited member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy,  MBACP (Accred.), and a UK registered independent therapist UKRCP

My professional background is in the NHS, having worked as a nurse, in both hospital and community settings, before re-training as a counsellor/psychotherapist.  My years working as a nurse have given me a valuable insight into some of the challenges faced by people living with long term illnesses and disabilities, and how this impacts not just on the individual but also on the family and carers.

As well as running my own private practice, I have several years' experience working in a counselling agency within the voluntary sector, seeing clients with a wide range of problems and from a diverse range of backgrounds. I also see clients referred through local GP surgeries and Employee Assistance Providers.
