RELATIONSHIP COUNSELLING

'50% OF SEPARATED COUPLES SAID THEY FELT THERE WERE THINGS THEY COULD HAVE DONE  TO PREVENT THEIR BREAKUP AND WISHED THEY'D DONE MORE...'

DSCF SUPPORT FOR ALL (GOVERNMENT GREEN PAPER) JANUARY 2010

When a relationship is going well, it can provide a sense of security, well-being and fulfilment.  However, even the most stable relationships can succombe to the pressures of everyday life, such as money worries, job pressures, ill health, caring for elderly parents, children etc. When things go wrong, our sense of self-worth and identity are negatively affected.  Without realising it, we often revert to patterns of behaviour that were learned in childhood and bring these into our adult relationships.

WHO IS RELATIONSHIP COUNSELLING FOR?

Relationship counselling is for any couple who recognise they are experiencing difficulties with any of the following:

  • Poor communication - feeling misunderstood
  • Breakdown of trust
  • Anger issues
  • Domestic violence
  • Infidelity
  • Pre-marital concerns
  • Jealousy
  • Repeated, circular, arguments
  • Sexual problems
I offer relationship counselling in a relaxed environment, allowing both partners to explore their difficulties, and be heard, without being judged.  I help couples to:

  • Define their goals - and agree steps to achieving them
  • Identify destructive patterns of behaviour that keep them stuck
  • Understand each other's relationship needs
  • Explore their expectations
  • Acknowledge, and respect, their differences
  • Understand how they got to this place
  • Build on what works in the relationship
Whilst it is preferable for both partners to attend, counselling can be undertaken with just one partner where the other is unable, or unwilling, to attend.

If you think relationship counselling may benefit you, please contact me for an appointment.  The initial session is a chance for you to explain some of the difficulties you are experiencing, and for me to answer any questions you may have about the way I work. You can then make a decision about whether you feel I am the right person to work with you.
